DIY Pool games to Play with The Family This Summer

Swimming weather is here, and you don’t need a fancy pool or tons of toys to keep you and your family busy in the pool this summer. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite games that you can play all summer long- And the best part is, most of them only require you and your friends!

Categories: Categories is a pool game where one player is chosen to be “It”. They choose a category, and the other players silently think of an item in that category. The “It” player has his back turned to the other players, and begins to call out items in the category. The goal is for the players to swim to the opposite end of the pool when their chosen item is called out. When the “It” player hears movement, they can try to tag the other players once they’ve started moving. You can go for speed, or silence, depending on your strategy. If a player is tagged, they become “It”!

Submarine: In the game of Submarine, one player is chosen as “It” while everyone else becomes a submarine. The submarines have 30 seconds to choose a spot in the pool where they have to stay for the rest of the game. The goal of the game is for the submarines to avoid being tagged by the “It” player, who has his eyes closed and is trying to listen and feel for the submarines. Submarines can only move by going underwater, but they must come back up in the same spot. Once per game, they can yell out “submarine!” to change spots. If a submarine is tagged, they become the new “It” player.

Watermelon Ball: This game was originally started with a real watermelon, but we recommend purchasing the official watermelon ball!
Watermelon Ball is a team-based game where two teams compete to score points by getting the Watermelon Ball to the goal. Goals are usually marked by pool decks on opposite sides of the pool, but families can set their own goals.
The game is similar to rugby, but with a unique twist. In Watermelon Ball, all passes must be made underwater for them to count. The ball is specially designed for underwater play, but it can be carried out of the water. However, throwing the ball in the air will result in a turnover to the other team. Players can dunk, hold, pull, or body block opponents to gain possession of the ball. The first team to score five points wins the game. Winners get first dibs on real watermelon slices!

Sharks and Minnows: One person is designated as the “Shark” and stands in the middle of the pool while the other players start at one end. The aim of the game is for the “Minnows” to swim from one end of the pool to the other without getting tagged by the “Shark”. Any player who gets tagged becomes a “Shark” themselves, and the game continues until there’s only one Minnow left.

Pool Basketball: #WetLikeI’mBook 💦 Although a built-in basketball hoop is convenient, all you really need for this game is a pool noodle tied up at each end to make a circle, and some sort of ball of course! The moving pool noodle hoop can actually make pool basketball even more fun and challenging, as the circular noodle moves around the pool while you and your teammates try to score. First team to 11 wins!

6 Reasons You Should Upgrade to a Variable Speed Pump

Are you tired of the high energy costs and constant noise from your pool pump? Then it’s time to upgrade to a variable speed pump! With this innovative technology, you can save money, reduce energy consumption, and enjoy a quieter pool area. Today, we’ll explore the top six reasons why customers should make the switch to a variable speed pump. Get ready to learn how this simple upgrade can transform your pool experience, and save you money in the long run!

1. Energy Efficiency: Single speed pumps are notorious for being energy hogs, using a lot of electricity to operate. In contrast, variable speed pumps can save you up to 90% on energy costs. This is because they are designed to operate at lower speeds for longer periods, rather than constantly running at high speeds. By using less energy, variable speed pumps are not only more eco-friendly, but they can also save you a lot of money on your energy bills!

2. Longer Lifespan: Single speed pumps are designed to operate at one speed and are often run at high speeds, which can lead to wear and tear and shorten their lifespan. In contrast, variable speed pumps are designed to operate at lower speeds, reducing wear and tear and extending their lifespan. This means you’ll have to replace your pump less frequently, saving you money in the long run.

3. Quieter Operation: No more waking up the neighbors or shouting to be heard over the noise of the pump! Variable speed pumps are much quieter than their single speed counterparts. By operating at lower speeds, they produce less noise, making your pool area a more peaceful place to relax.

4. Improved Filtration: Variable speed pumps can also improve the filtration of your pool water. By operating at lower speeds for longer periods, they can cycle more water through the filter, which means your water will be cleaner and clearer. This is particularly important if you have a lot of debris in your pool, such as leaves and twigs.

5. Customizable Settings: You can set your variable speed pump to run at different speeds at different times of the day, depending on your pool usage and other factors. This allows you to customize the operation of your pump to meet your specific needs, improving efficiency and performance. You also have the ability to connect it to automation, controlling the entire process from your phone!

6. Cost Effective: The #1 reason you’ll love your new pump is the amount of money it will save you. Depending on usage, it’s estimated that you’ll pay off the new pump in 1-3 years! Check out this graphic for the average savings you could see on a new variable speed pump!

In summary, upgrading to a variable speed pump is a smart investment for any pool owner. Although there is an upfront cost, you will ultimately save yourself a lot of money, time, and headache! From energy savings and improved filtration to customizable settings and a longer lifespan, the benefits are clear. Don’t let your outdated single speed pump hold you back any longer – make the switch and start enjoying a more efficient, eco-friendly, and peaceful pool area. Contact Flamingo Pools today to learn more about upgrading to a variable speed pump and start enjoying the benefits!

Swimming Pool Repairs You May DIY

All the items below are the most straightforward issues that you may encounter any day, even when your swimming pool appears to be functioning normally. Depending on the use and the conditions surrounding your swimming pool, it is helpful to have a stock of filters, a skimmer box, a pool cover, and a repair kit in case you need to do minor repairs.

Replacing a filter: The pool filter is easily accessible and replaceable.

Replacing a sand filter (if applicable): Some pools have this filter, mainly when a pool is located near sandy areas.

Replacing the Pool Cover: Replacing the pool cover is also a straightforward task.

Minor Repairs for the Skim Plate: If it is a little dent, then it is OK.

What to Know Before You Chlorine Wash Pool Surfaces

Green pools are dangerous. These are dangerous breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitos. Worst of all, swimming in one won’t be pleasant. The Arizona government will place fines on pool owners because of green pools cause.

Simple pool draining will not permanently remove the root cause of the problem: algae buildup. The algae spores hidden in the cracks and crevices of the pool plaster surface will grow and spread. Your pool turning green caused by algae blooms will just be a matter of time. To have an algae-free swimming pool, you will need chlorine washes.

Pool cleaning involving liquid chlorine washes is meant to bring the chemicals to these cracks and crevices where the algae spores form. You may acid wash the pool. Acid washes are done when the water is already drained. This matter is not as straightforward as it looks. You may need to seek the help of a dependable pool service Gilbert AZ can provide.

How do you perform a chlorine wash?

Drain Pool: Draining the water takes up an entire day. There are restrictions on where the water should go when drained. Make sure that you know where the disposed water goes.

Commence chlorine washes: You start the chlorine wash process by pouring the liquid chlorine on the pool walls and your pool floor. Start strong scrubbing of the swimming pool surface to remove the algae. Vigorous scrubbing with a stiff-bristled brush can help remove the algae spores hidden in the cracks and crevices of the pool surfaces. Rinse the surface with water once you scrub the entire surface of the swimming pool thoroughly. Repeat those steps until you are assured of cleaning the surface of the whole swimming pool.

Pump out the wastewater: Water containing chlorine, water, and algae will form puddles at the bottom of the swimming pool. Make sure to pump out this water before refilling your swimming pool.

Refill the pool: Depending on the size of the pool, this will take a day or two to finish.

When is the best time to perform acid wash or chlorine washes?

The best time to perform acid wash or chlorine washes for swimming pools in Arizona is in the colder months of the year. Arizona’s desert environment may cause cracks on the tiles or pool plaster on the surface of your pool. The entire pool surface should be full during the summer months to prevent more damage to the pool surface.

How can I prevent algae growth?

Chlorine wash cleans hidden algae spores effectively. However, the work is not done yet without proper pool maintenance.

Make sure the water levels are balanced. Once the water stagnates, the chemicals will not work effectively because of poor chemical balance. You may need to drain the water if you can’t reach the proper chemical balance.

Always ensure that the filter pump is cleaned regularly. Your pump requires regular cleaning to clear it from debris. The pump does the job by removing dirt from the water returning it to the pool. Ignoring the cleaning of your filter pump will eventually lead to a green pool.

One of the most effective way to maintain the pool surface is by using a pool vacuum cleaner.

What To Know Before You Acid Wash Your Pool

Does your swimming pool look so old because of unremovable pool stains? Vigorous scrubbing can only remove so much but it won’t be enough to remove those persistent stains. Chlorine wash pool activities are for algae elimination. You might do this every two or three years. However, another three years of use will form stains that can’t be removed without a specialized acid wash process. The acid washing process using substances as soda ash and muriatic acid can be a hazardous activity if you don’t do it carefully. To acid wash a pool, a garden hose, some over the shelf chemicals for pool acid, and some research won’t always work. If you want a safe and effective stain removal job, then leave it to Flamingo Pools, the pool service gilbert az experts to the the job for you.

Reasons to Acid Wash Your Pool

Is your pool surface, and pool wall, are stained and no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to clean it? If you answered yes to this question, you may want to consider getting pool acid washing. Dirt, rust, and algae will create stains in your pool if not cleaned properly or quickly enough. However, sometimes as your water gets older, the chemicals just aren’t as effective and the pool surface will stain easier.

What Is Acid Washing?

When you are acid washing your pool, you are actually taking off a thin layer of the pool floor or wall, giving it a bright, new look. If the stains run deep in the pebble or plaster, acid wash is not guaranteed to remove all stains. Acid washing your pool is a big job and takes a good amount of time and effort. If you perform this task incorrectly, you can seriously damage your pool, so be sure that you know what you’re doing. If you do not have experience or are not comfortable working with acid, hire a professional to do it for you.

Steps You Need To Take

  1. Drain the water– It will take one day to drain pool water. Make sure you know where to dispose of the water. Some cities have restrictions as to where you are able to drain your water. Also, be sure that the temperature is going to be cooperative to avoid serious damage. Draining the water takes time. Having a submersible pump may help you save time. Note also that you need to schedule water draining during the colder months.
  2. Acid wash the pool- When acid washing your pool, it will look something like this. First, you will rinse a portion of the wall or floor with a hose. Then, you will pour acid on the surface and scrub with an acid brush. After waiting 30-60 seconds, you will rinse the wall/floor. To prevent unwanted damage, you are going to want to neutralize the leftover water-acid mixture that will form at the bottom of your pool as you go by adding the correct proportions of soda ash. For more detailed information on how to acid wash your own pool, visit How To Acid Wash a Pool. Keep in mind that acid can be very harmful and dangerous to work with. Once again, if you do not have experience or are uncomfortable working with acid, contact Flamingo Pools to get this done for you!
  3. Remove wastewater- The resulting acid puddle is dangerous. Before disposing of your wastewater, make sure you have neutralized it properly. If you fail to do so, the acidic water could cause major damage and be harmful to the health of people, plants, and animals who come in contact with it.
  4. Refill the pool- Refilling your pool could take a day or two, so plan on the whole process taking a few days total.

How Often Should You Acid Wash Your Pool?

It is a good idea to acid wash your pool around every 5 years. Assuming that you are going to drain and refill your pool every 2-3 years, it would be smart to do this every other time that you drain the water. Do not acid wash your pool too often because it could cause damage to the walls and floor.

What Kind of Pool Surfaces are Safe to Acid Wash?

If your pool has a pebble, plaster, or quartz surface, it is safe to acid wash. If your pool is vinyl, fiberglass, acrylic, or painted, acid washing will cause damage. In Arizona, there are many examples of a concrete pool, but note that even these will receive damage from acid if the task is not done properly. Note also that acids, such as muriatic acid, and any pool acid mixture, is dangerous work. Using protective gear is very important when you do this task.

Who, Why, When, & Where to Drain Pool Water?

Green pools are a nagging problem for pool owners. Not only is having a green pool look unsightly, but it is also a dangerous breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitos. Having a green pool violates county health regulations. If you hate paying fines because of this, then it is time to drain your pool and take action to solve the root causes of what makes your pool green.

Swimming pool water will eventually have poor chemical balance because of many factors. Those factors will cause algae problems eventually if you don’t maintain the pool properly. The only recourse is to chlorine wash pool water or acid wash pool to get rid of the algae spores. And, to do that, you need to drain the water in the pool first.

A swimming pool presents several specific issues that you need to consider when draining it. You may need to replace damaged tiles or repair the pool plaster at one point. However, there is more to emptying pool water. Before even starting thinking of doing your stuff with an empty pool, read on to learn a few important things about why you should think twice before draining your pool water.

Who should drain pool water?

Having a pool pump plus some research may not be enough for you to manage your pool water. Nor just simply removing the plug is enough to clear your swimming pool water so you can commence scrubbing the surface.

The draining process is not as straightforward as it looks. It is a complicated subject that you need to learn thoroughly. Especially with the climate, and other specific challenges in Arizona, you might do more damage if you tried draining the pool yourself.

Seeking help from experienced pool professionals like Flamingo Pools will spare you the trouble of balancing several factors to drain your pool safely. Moreover, the cleaning job that comes right after is also more complicated and is better left to experts to do effectively. Flamingo Pools offers pool service in Gilbert and the surrounding areas, and we will be glad to help

Why should you drain your pool?

As mentioned, once your water turns green, you may need to drain your pool as soon as possible. The green color is caused by Algae blooms which happens only when your chlorine is not enough to prevent it. Why is that so?

Chlorine loses its potency because of chemical balance, or the lack of it. Watching and maintaining chemical levels is what Flamingo Pools are dead serious about when we do our weekly pool maintenance work for our customers. This imbalance in chemical levels are caused by two major factors:

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) levels rise as your water gets older. TDS levels come from the accumulation of everything that goes into your pool water such as body oils, hair products, makeup, sunscreen, chemicals, etc.). There will come a point that the pool water is so saturated that it won’t dissolve solids well. You will counteract this by using more proportion of chemicals to maintain the balance. Eventually, the pool chemicals won’t be effective anymore leading to unabated algae growth.

Another reason is the high levels of CyA or Cyanuric Acid. CyA aids the effectiveness of Chlorine. There will come a point when trying to balance the levels of pool chemicals, you have placed much CyA and Chlorine without the desired effect. That is when you should be draining your pool.

Water from the storm drain to the areas surrounding the pool, contributing to the total dissolved solids.

When should you drain your pool?

If you heard about pool pop then this is what happens when you do your pool draining process when you have too much groundwater underneath the pool. That means you shouldn’t drain a pool after days of rains. Hydrostatic pressure relief valves adds a layer of protection to prevent pool pop by allowing some water to seep in to counteract the water pressure pressing from beneath. In that case, you wouldn’t be able to drain the pool entirely.

Given Arizona’s harsh summer heat, it is advisable to schedule draining your pool during the colder months. The temperatures could reach more than 100 degrees and will crack the pool plaster or the tiles. If you have a pebble pool surface, it is recommended that the ambient temperatures are at 90 degrees or lower. If you have a plaster surface, then you should drain at lower temperatures (80 degrees or lower). Not to mention exposing your pool lights to the elements. Note that the materials on your pool’s floor is not the same as in your pool sitting.

Many blog articles mention draining your pool every 2 to 3 years. However, given Arizona’s harsh climate especially during the summer, your pool is more utilized and thereby receives more TDS (see earlier section) and will require balancing the pool water chemistry more often.

It will take around two days to drain a pool. Allow another two to three days for pool cleaning. With proper weekly pool maintenance done by Flamingo Pools through the summer, you may still be able to enjoy your pool while targeting the schedule of your pool drains for the autumn months.

Where should you drain your pool?

The local water authority and some communities will place restrictions on where you can drain your pool. Some may allow you to use the storm drains or your sewage. Watch out for the level of your sanitary sewer cleanout. Ignoring this will make your sewage back up into the drains.

If the local water authority will allow it, you may need to comment to a drainage hose downhill where there won’t be issues causing sewage back up.

Pool drain and acid washing are serious matters which you should leave to experts. Flamingo Pools always the stress safety of the entire activity, as well as being able to satisfy regulations. We also make sure that no damage to any pool equipment will result in the pool draining and maintenance activities.

Submersible pump for above ground pool or in-ground pool

A submersible pump is useful, especially during winter. These are perfect for draining standing water from pool winter covers. These can assist in draining pool water even when its not winter.
